Is "American Idol" Homophobic?
Here's what I think: "American Idol" = American + Idol
America itself is a writhing bed of homophobia. Why wouldn't a television series positioned to serve this audience reflect its desires? Let's face it people, most American Idiots are very, very afraid of gays, especially so when it comes to the transgendered. To expect more from the Fox producers is to expect them to take down those silly Coke product placements - it's not going to happen. Yes, the judges should be more sensitive to those with obvious physical and mental challenges. But in all fairness, I imagine it's hard to separate the crazy from the truly crazy during the audition process, and that must make for a long day. Randy and Simon, I forgive you. I know in 'my heart' that you're 'good people.'
(In all honestly, I just couldn't care less. People who can't sing for beans yet try out for "American Idol" deserve what they get - public mocking and ridicule.)
Here's what people think GLAAD thinks about the whole matter, but here's what GLAAD REALLY thinks!
A note to the weepy and rather angry transgendered individual who was poorly treated by Randy and Simon: keep trying girl/guy/whatever - but next time, go after something you've got a snowball's chance in hell of attaining. Baby steps darling, baby steps. (If it makes you feel any better, I really liked your outfit.)
I hated the outfit.
